The Arizona landscape is truly something special to behold this time of year. I missed getting a picture of the recent snow covered peaks around the valley 2 weeks ago. It was a beautiful sight and now I wish I had made the effort.
Here in the desert, the wild flowers at South Mountain are beginning to bloom and line the trails in a cheerful and welcoming array of color. We had a decent amount of rain last fall and this winter and the spectacular results are taking place right now. I have been out for several hikes this winter and spring and each time I go a new wildflower bloom is added to the mix. Thursday, the Globe Mallow and Lupine joined the party of Poppies, Nurse Plants and an irregular purple flower that has a small leaf that smells like an onion or chive.
Saturday, we explored a new hike at the Superstition Mountains which did not disappoint. Although the flowers weren’t as abundant and there were several other hikers and a few mules and horses sharing the trail, the views were breath taking. The extra trail traffic forced us to slow down and appreciate the spectacular scenery more than we would have at our regular pace.
If you haven’t gotten out yet this year, force yourself to do so over the next couple of months. You will be glad you did! I try to get out after a good rain or windy day as it seems the skies are clearer and the flora and fauna brighter and the animals more vocal. Everything is very green this year.
If you are too busy to get out for a hike, find a pretty spot to watch the sunset as you eat dinner. The hot temps will be here before you know it.
Here are some images from some of my wanderings …
